Linking terms and thesauri

Docs

KLEKSI supports linking data to terms from external thesauri and terminology sources. This uniquely establishes the meaning of data and makes objects more discoverable, exchangeable, and suitable for Linked Open Data (LOD).

Through the integrated link with the Terminology Network of the Digital Heritage Network (NDE), you can search for and link terms from dozens of national and international thesauri.

Why link terms?
When you enter a word, it is not always immediately clear what is meant by it.

Take the name "Rembrandt", for example. This can refer to:

  • Rembrandt van Rijn (painter)
  • Rembrandt the Elder
  • The movie Rembrandt
  • A street name or other meaning

By linking a term to a recognized thesaurus, the intended meaning is precisely defined. This allows users, researchers, and other systems to interpret the information correctly.

In addition, objects become more easily findable within search engines, heritage platforms, and Linked Open Data networks.

Link to the Terminology Network
KLEKSI has a direct API connection to the Terminology Network of the Digital Heritage Network (NDE).

When you search for a term, KLEKSI searches more than forty terminology sources in real time, including:

  • RKDartists
  • GTAA
  • Wikidata
  • AAT (Art & Architecture Thesaurus)
  • Geonames
  • More than 50 other heritage and collection thesauri

The available sources are automatically expanded and maintained by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.

Linking a term to an object field
Next to many input fields, there is a button that allows you to associate a term with the entered value.

How does it work?

  1. Enter a value in a field.
  2. Click on Select Term.
  3. KLEKSI automatically searches for matching terms within the Term Network.
  4. View the found results.
  5. Select the term that best matches the intended meaning.

For each result, you can view, among other things:

  • The name of the term.
  • The thesaurus used.
  • The definition of the term.
  • Any broader terms.
  • Any narrower terms.
  • A link to the source information.

After selection, the term is linked to the entered value.

Manually link a URI
If you already know the desired term, you can also link it manually.

  1. Click on the plus icon next to Select Term.
  2. Enter the URI of the desired term.
  3. Save the link.

This is especially useful when working with external terminology sources or already known Linked Data identifiers.

Linking terms to dropdown lists
You can also link terms to records within a selection list.

The advantage of this is that every time a user selects a value from the dropdown list, the linked term is automatically added.

This eliminates the need to manually re-assign the same term to every object.

Linking a term to a picklist record

  1. Go to Selection Lists via the menu on the left.
  2. Open the desired selection list.
  3. Click on Content selection list.
  4. Click Edit next to a record.
  5. Click on Select Term.
  6. Search and select the desired term.
  7. Save the change.

You can link multiple terms to a single record.

View related terms
When a record from a picklist contains one or more linked terms, this is displayed within object management with a counter.

This allows you to immediately see how many terms are linked to the selected value.

Linking predicates
In addition to terms, you can also link semantic predicates to fields.

Predicates describe the relationship between data and enable the exchange of information according to international Linked Open Data standards.

KLEKSI supports predicates from, among others:

  • Dublin Core
  • Schema.org
  • Europeana Data Model (EDM)
  • CIDOC CRM
  • Wikidata

Linking a predicate to a field
Go to Object types.

  1. Click Edit Structure next to the desired object type.
  2. Open the element containing the relevant field.
  3. Select the field.
  4. Click on Select Term.

KLEKSI then searches for available predicates within the supported terminology sources.

When linking a Term to a drop-down list, a relationship must be selected beforehand, for example:

  • Same as
  • Similar to
  • Consists of
  • Applies to
  • Created by
  • Located in

Select the relationship that best matches the meaning of the field.

Example
Suppose you have created a Time Periods selection list.

The record is in this selection list:

Archean

To semantically enrich this term:

  1. Open the Eras selection list.
  2. Click Edit next to Archeicum.
  3. Click on Select Term.

Choose a relationship type, for example:

  • Same as
  • Similar to

Search for the corresponding term on Wikidata, for example.

  1. Select the correct meaning.
  2. Save the link.

From that moment on, this semantic link is automatically used wherever this record is selected from the selection list.

Expansion with other thesauri
In addition to the Termennetwerk, supplementary thesauri or terminology sources can be linked if desired.

Contact the support department if you want to use a specific thesaurus that is not yet available in your environment.

Important
By linking terms and predicates, you capture not only words but also their meanings and interrelationships. As a result, collections become more searchable, easier to exchange, and better prepared for Linked Open Data, heritage portals, and future forms of data exchange.
